Bulgaria: Romanian Coal Mine Exploson Kills Five The tragic accident has happened near the city of Uricani.

The death of five miners in after an explosion at a coal mine on Saturday has been confirmed by officials in the Balkan country.

The five were servicing an electric transformer when the explosion occurred.

The victims of the tragic accident have been aged between 30 and 35 The mayor of the town of Uricani, Dan Buhaescu, has informed the media.

Earlier, rescue teams headed to the mine in the Jiu Valley mining region, about 350 kilometers (220 miles) west of Bucharest and later pulled out the remains of the miners. About 800 miners are employed at the mine, which is due to be shut down by 2018.

This is the most serious accident in the Romanian mining industry since 13 workers were killed after an explosion in late 2008, again in the Jiu Valley
