Romania may leave the International Francophony Organization (OIF) as a retaliation measure against the French position stating the country is not ready for Schengen.
This was announced by Adrian Severin, a Romanian MEP on Thursday.
Thus, even though Romanians speak a Romance language and many of them understand French, and in spite of the close friendship between the two nations, the country may send a strong negative message to Paris.
Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has concluded that the country would never be taken seriously in the EU until it used its veto on issues of major importance, according to Severin. He was in charge of the Foreign Ministry in 1996-1997.
Romania has already reacted negatively to the reluctance shown by France, Germany and other EU states on its chances of joining Europe's border free zone. The country's current Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi has stated that the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism is a tool used by the Western European EU members to put Romania under pressure.
The decision on Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen entry is expected to be announced at a 24-25 February meeting of EU Justice and Interior Ministers in Budapest.
Both countries still hope they will join Schengen by the end of 2011.
