The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Kirill, will conduct a Divine service in Moscow on January 6 before starting an all-night Christmas vigil in the Christ the Savior's Cathedral, which is expected to be attended by more than 5,000 people.
The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on January 7, as part of the Orthodox world preserving the old-style Julian calendar, which is two weeks behind the 16th Century Gregorian calendar adopted by Catholics and Protestants.
Russia is traditionally joined in Christmas celebrations by the Orthodox Churches of Jerusalem, Serbia, Ukraine, Macedonia and Georgia.
