Bulgaria: Bulgarian Students Prepare for 'Skipping-School Day' About 55,000 Bulgarian high-school students have attended in Facebook the event "National Day for Skipping School on January 3." Photo by BGNES

Despite the national protests of high-school students, the Bulgarian Education Ministry has announced that school activities will begin January 3.

However, about 55,000 students have supported in Facebook the event “National Day for Skipping School on January 3.”

“The students started unreasonable protests for a longer winter vacation because no one can control the calendars throughout the years,” said Yanka Takeva, Head of the Syndicate of Bulgarian Teachers.

In her words, many of the national holidays in 2011 will be during the weekends. She has explained that since they have happened to be during work days throughout the years, students’ vacations were extended.

“So the protests are unreasonable. On the contrary, Bulgarian students have the longest vacations in Europe and even in the world,” Takeva said.

However, Milena Todorova from the NGO “Movement of Bulgarian Mothers” in Plovdiv did not share Takeva’s opinion.

“The winter vacation of the students was too short and they have the right to request its extension,” Todorova said.

She has pointed out that she does not support skipping school, but she noted that in this case the students are right.

In her words, the school schedule has to be revised because the education system is very old and it has not changed in years.
