Bulgaria: Math Wonderkid Chosen 'Face of the Year' by Bulgarian Media Radko Kotev has been voted Bulgarian figure of the year by private channel spectators.

Radko Kotev, an 19-year old highschool student, was chosen as the Bulgarian 'Face of the Year 2010' by spectators of the private channel bTV.

The youngster grabbed the prize for the most popular Bulgarian in 2010 against all odds, beating a couple of actors, politicians and other celebrities.

Kotev deserved his place in the spotlight by solving the ancient geometrical problem of Apollonius in a way no other mathematician has ever done. For his achievement, he received a prize by the EU Contest for Young Scientists, held in Lisbon, being chosen among 85 different projects.

In 2011, the talented Bulgarian will move on to study in the University of Glasgow.

The problem of Apollonius is to construct circles that are tangent to three given circles in a plane. Apollonius of Perga (ca. 262 BC – ca. 190 BC) posed and solved this famous problem in his work "Tangencies"

The problem of Apollonius requires straightedge and compass construction which has made it so interesting and many mathematicians have tried to solve it.

The last known solution of the problem dates back to the nineteenth century and is done by Joseph Gergonne. The young Bulgarian's solution is only the fifth known in history.

In an interview, Kotev has admitted he is currently working on another geometrical problem.
