Changes to Bulgaria’s Public Procurement Act Move Forward
Bulgaria’s parliamentary regional policy and local self-government committee adopted at first reading the new Public Procurement Act.
The Regional Prosecutor's Office in the southern Bulgaria city of Yambol pressed Wednesday a new charge against Mayor, Georgi Slavov.
Slavov is accused of violating the public procurement procedure in the repairs of the "Diana" sports facility resulting in BGN 30 000 in damages to the City Hall.
After it was found out that there are no bidders applying to do the work, the Mayor has invited a company to carry out the repairs and signed a contract without having secured the financing.
In October, Slavov was sentenced to five years behind bars by the Yambol Regional Court.
In addition, the magistrates banned him from holding high-ranking posts in the next six years.
In this case, the Mayor was also charged with abuse of power related to a public procurement procedure. The public tender was for the construction of sewage and plumbing in the city and, allegedly, deprived the municipality of over BGN 2 M.
Slavov is appealing the verdict.
The trial started in July and has been postponed twice.
