A short circuit has occurred in a transformer located in the the Bulgarian Kozloduy NPP's so called "Special Corpus 3" – a non-nuclear unit – on Sunday.

The accident has taken place at 17:30 local time on December 12 2010. The staff has reacted immediately and no harm whatsoever has been registered. A special commission has been assigned to investigate the reasons for the technical failure.

The 1000-MW Units 5 and 6 of Bulgaria's nuclear power plant, located near the third Special Corpus, are running in full capacity.

Only Units 5 6 are currently operational at the Kozloduy NPP after Bulgaria shut down the 440-MW reactors 1, 2, 3, and 4 as part of its EU accession negotiations.

Unless it is extended, the life of Units 5 and 6 is to expire in 2017-2020.
