The 39-year-old Australian was arrested by the Metropolitan police in London on a European Arrest Warrant.
He has been accused by the Swedish authorities of unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual assault and one rape, all alleged to have been committed in August 2010.
Last week, at the request of Sweden's Stockholm Criminal Court, Interpol issued a "red notice" placing Assange on a list of wanted suspects.
Earlier on Tuesday, Fox News annoucned that Assange was expected to surrender to the British police.
He has denied the allegations, claiming that the two women involved made theri accusations public only after they became aware of each other's relationships with Assange.
The Wikileaks founder will appear at the City of Westminster Magistrate's Court later in the day, CNN has reported.
According to Mark Stephens, Assange's lawyer, his client had been trying to meet the Swedish prosecutor in various ways to find out the details about the allegations.
"Julian Assange has been the one in hot pursuit to vindicate himself to clear his good name. It's about time we got to the end of the day and we got some truth, justice and rule of law," he said, as cited by the BBC.
The Wikileaks founder faced huge world-wide criticism for publishing details of secret information.
