Bulgaria: Bulgarian President: WikiLeaks Reveal 'Worrying' Matters Photo by BGNES

There are "worrying" matters in the secret cables recently released by WikiLeaks, said Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov.

Speaking for the Bulgarian National Radio at the close of the OSCE meeting in Astana, Parvanov did not specify precisely what those worrying things were.

The Bulgarian President underscored that in his contacts with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton they have not discussed potential links between members of the previous cabinet and Russian mafia bosses. The topic of such links was among the hottest point in cables sent by Clinton to the American Embassy in Sofia, as revealed by WikiLeaks.

"As far as ties to controversial Russian circles are concerned, perhaps the American Embassy would be interested by documented information published by Bulgarian media some ten years ago about certain "family foundations"," said Parvanov adding he is just joking.

The Bulgarian President was probably refering to information around the funding of the rightist Union of Democratic Forces in the late 90s, which was then chaired by Ivan Kostov, Bulgaria's PM 1997-2001.

The UDF was said to be financed by a network of foundations, one of them created by Kostov's wife Elena Kostova, some of which had admitted they have received funds from offshore companies. The names of controversial Russian figures Michael Cherney (Chorny) and Grigoriy Luchanski.
