Bulgaria Grapples with Soaring Corruption Rates: New Report Reveals Shocking Data
Corruption in Bulgaria has soared to its third highest peak in history, according to a recent report by the Center for the Study of Democracy
Two men, including an officer of Bulgaria's State National Security Agency DANS, have been arrested for bribing senior policemen to get classified information.
The arrests were made in Sofia late Wednesday night in an operation codenamed "Moles", Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has announced.
The operation was conducted together by the Unit for Combating Organized Crime GDBOP, DANS, and the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office.
The other detainee is an officer of the "Migration Directorate" of the Interior Ministry and a former officer of GDBOP, who was arrested while handing a senior policeman the sum of USD 500 for receiving from him classified information, Tsvetanov said.
"By bribing officers of the Interior Ministry they have been conducting criminal activities by gathering classified information about the work of organized crime groups dealing with ATM fraud and forging credit cards, banknotes," Tsvetanov explained saying the two detainees have been watched for months by the police.
