Bulgaria Urged to Bring IT into Army, Defense Industry

Representatives of the Bulgarian state and the business sector declared readiness to work for the integration of latest IT achievements with the country's armed forces and defense industry.

A round table entitled "IT Aspects in Defense and Security in the Context of NATO's New Strategic Concept and the Strategy of the EU" took place in Sofia Friday with the participation of Defense Minister Anyu Angelov, Prime Minister's defense advisor Svetoslav Spasov, US Ambassador to Bulgaria James Warlick, the President of the Atlantic Club in Bulgaria Solomon Passy, and representatives of major companies.

"Bulgaria must be not just a consumer of modern technologies but also a producer," US Ambassador Warlick stated.

During the round table, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's advisor on defense, Svetoslav Spasov present a strategy for the development of the Bulgarian defense industrial and technological base, and urged the Bulgarian and international IT businesses to be proactive in this field.

Petar Statev, Chair of the Bulgarian ICT Cluster, a business organization specialized in information and communication technologies, urged the government to enable small and medium-sized hi-tech firms, which are successful internationally, to work on public procurement projects.

According to Georgi Rangelov, General Manager of Microsoft Bulgaria, Microsoft is ready to invest in military education in order to help Bulgaria generate the specialist it needs in defense technologies.

"Use us, we are part of this country, and not just geographically," said Konstantin Veselinov, manager of HiComp.
