More than half of the companies in Bulgaria face a shortage of qualified workers, according to Grigor Dimitrov, Director of "Retirement Relations" at the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA).

Dimitrov says the shortage of skilled labor is the major factor debilitating the development of 56% of the businesses in Bulgaria, as quoted by dir.bg.

He pointed out that the increased number of employees working with labor contracts in Bulgaria represents a positive trend. On the other hand, the fact that the share of people in Bulgaria holding a second job is six times smaller than the EU average is seen as a negative development.

Dimitrov cited results from a BIA survey of the labor market in Bulgaria showing the employment ratio of those with university degrees in Bulgaria is 72%, while of those with middle school education – 24%.

In his words, however, the greatest problem facing Bulgaria is the aging of the work force as the number of employed people in Bulgaria over 55 years of age rose by 35% in the recent years.

At the same time, early mortality is also a major problem as 25% of the people who die in Bulgaria are younger than 65.
