Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
The Member of the European Parliament from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), Ivaylo Kalfin, confirmed he would take part in the political project of President, Georgi Parvanov.
At the end of last week Parvanov, who is a former BSP leader, announced that he was to launch the project, which he called a civic initiative, on November 11. He did not confirm or refute information the new movement would be called Alternative for Bulgarian Revival, the Bulgarian acronym being ABV (the first three letters of the Bulgarian alphabet).
According to media publications, other followers include ex EU Funds Minister, Meglena Plugchieva, popular actor, and ex Culture Minister, Stefan Danailov, Academician, Andrey Pantev, all Socialist Members of the Parliament, journalist, Velislava Dareva, and other prominent figures and celebrities, some of whom such as popular late night show host, Slavi Trifonov or Bulgaria's first EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, already firmly denied any involvement.
Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, brushed off the news about the new party as no threat whatsoever, and a sign the opposition is getting more and more divided, bud pointed out Bulgaria no longer has a real President.
Kalfin, who is also a former Foreign Minister in the previous, Socialist-led Three-Way Coalition cabinet, said he decided to join in order to counter the dictatorship that has returned to Bulgaria.
"All decisions in the ruling Citizens for European development of Bulgaria (GERB) Party are made by one person. There is no State regulator left that is not fully dependent of GERB now – look at the Central Bank, the Commission for Finance Control, the State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation, the Council for Electronic Media," Kalfin is quoted saying Monday, adding GERB is now trying to take over the National Audit Office.
The MEP explained that for now the movement would remain a civic initiative and would not grow into a political party. (The Bulgarian Constitution bans the President from being a party leader or founding a political party.)
