Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has swiftly replied dismissing allegations by Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov that he has ties to murky business.
Earlier Thursday Tsvetanov alleged that Parvanov has been providing systematic "political backing" to notorious businessman, ex-secret agent and suspected mafia boss Alexei 'the Tractor' Petrov.
In his statement Parvanov attributed Tsvetanov's words to the "highly embarassing situation" of the minister, after he has been accused of unlawful acquisition of properties.
The head of state said Tsvetanov apparently intended to create "an artificial conflict" and requested clarification on the issues by posing five questions to the minister, as follows.
"Which politicians have had business relations with Alexei Petrov, and what are their companies?", "Who, on whose proposal and on what grounds drafted Petrov into the State Agency for National Security?", "Has Sofia Municipality had relations with Lev Insurance at the time current PM Borisov was mayor and Tsvetanov was his deputy on security?", "Has Petrov or any of his firms financed election campaigns for GERB or any of its leaders?", "Who are the Bulgarian politicians who have had phone conversations with Petrov?"
"Everyone wants positions – in regulatory bodies and ministries," he emphasized.
