The Mayor of Bulgaria's southern city of Yambol, Georgi Slavov, was sentenced Thursday to five years behind bars by the Yambol Regional Court.

In addition, the magistrates banned Slavov from holding high-ranking posts in the next six years.

The Mayor is charged with abuse of power related to a public procurement procedure. The public tender was for the construction of sewage and plumbing in the city and, allegedly, deprived the municipality of over BGN 2 M.

Slavov stated he will appeal because the Court's rule was not based on any evidence, just on assumptions, and reiterated he is not guilty.

The trial started in July and has been postponed twice.
