Secret Terror Plot Thwarted: Armenia's Close Call with Chaos
Armenian security forces have announced the successful arrest of five individuals linked to an attempted "terrorist attack" on government institutions
Several European intelligence agencies have intercepted a terror plot to launch attacks on Britain and other European countries, the British TV channel Sky News reports Wednesday, citing own sources.
According to the report, terrorists from Pakistan, believed to be connected to Al Qaeda have planned simultaneous attacks on London and several cities in France and Germany. The attacks would follow the style of those in Mumbai in November 2008, according to Sky News.
The authorities in the UK are not planning imminent arrests, but remain on high alert with elevated terror threat levels, BBC informs.
US officials declined to comment on specific plots in Europe or elsewhere but acknowledged drone strikes in Pakistan were meant to disrupt militant networks planning attacks.
According to Sky News the plan was well-thought, but still in initial stage.
In France, on Tuesday, the Eiffel Tower and the surrounding Champ de Mars park were evacuated briefly because of a bomb alert, but police failed to find any explosives.
French Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux said on September 20 that France faced a real terrorism threat due to a backlash from al Qaeda militants in North Africa and growing fears of an attack from home-grown terrorist cells within French borders.
Meanwhile, the German Federal government stated German intelligence services were aware of the information published in world media about a terror plot in the US and Europe, but did not own any evidence Germany was under a direct threat.
