Serbia and its former province Kosovo will soon be holding direct talks, Serbian President Boris Tadic announced at the UN General Assembly.

"Soon the two parties will be talking to each other for the first time in many years. We must be patient and seek out those issues which allow confidence to be built on each side. There will be many issues to discuss and some of them will be complicated. You all can contribute to an atmosphere that creates trust," Tadic declared in the UN as cited by CNN.

The Serbian President, however, emphasized that the talks did not mean that Serbia planned to recognize the independence of Kosovo ever.

He said it is critically important that the UN member states that have not recognized Kosovo's independence "to stay on the course of non-recognition" during talks.

"This will be a significant contribution to ensuring that unilateral attempts to impose outcomes to ethnic and territorial disputes are not legitimized," he said.

The newly announced Serbian decision to hold direct negotiations with Kosovo as well as the recent toning down of a Serbian draft resolution on the independence of the former province have been achieved under heavy EU pressure in which EU High Representative for foreign and security policy Catherine Ashton has been especially active.

This development comes after in July, the International Court of Justice ruled that Kosovo's declaration of independence "did not violate general international law", after Serbia had the UN General Assembly refer the matter to the court.

Serbia, which says "statehood has never been attained without the consent of the parent state," says there is not yet a "clear settlement" of the Serbian-Kosovo matter.

Kosovo has been recognized by 70 UN member states, including the US and 22 of the 27 EU member states.
