Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has made it clear that his most important meeting during the 65th session of the UN General Assembly was with his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.

Borisov, who is on a week-long visit to the US for the regular UN session and the UN summit on the Millenium Development Goals, made this comment himself after meeting top world and European leaders earlier on Monday.

These included UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN General Assembly chair Joseph Deiss, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, World Bank President Robert Zoellick. He also met with the leaders of seven American Jewish organizations, who are reported to have promised increased investment in several sectors of the Bulgarian economy in exchange for Bulgaria's diplomatic support within the EU and the UN against the Iranian nuclear program.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister pointed out that at the latest meeting of the EU Council last week, the People's Republic of China has been identified as a strategic partner for the Union.

"Actually, even as the EU has just accepted China as a strategic partner, we are already ahead in our meetings with the Chinese, and in our investment plans. We want to see China establish hi-tech zones in Bulgaria, a permanent technology expo for Europe, and allow them to utilize the potential of the Bulgarian ports. Our ports are some of the most attractive ones in the EU," declared Borisov with respect to his meeting with Wen Jiabao, which is scheduled for Thursday.

He underscored the importance of the meeting because of the expectations for attracting Chinese investments.

"I am really hopeful with respect to the meeting with my colleague Wen Jiabao here," the PM said as cited by BNT, arguing the potential Chinese investments should help Bulgaria with its economic and financial situation at a time when the EU is considering imposing severe sanctions on those member states whose budget deficits exceed the 3% threshold set by the Stability and Growth Pact.

In the past four months, the Bulgarian government has been increasingly active in attracting Chinese state and private investors for the future large-scale industrial zone at Bozhurishte near Sofia.

In addition to Chinese investors, while in New York, Borisov has also sought to lure back to Bulgaria members of the Bulgarian diaspora in New York City.
