The Bulgarian government will most likely select from among F-16, Eurofighter Typhoon, or Gripen when it decides to purchase its new multipurpose fighter jets.

This has been announced by Defense Minister Anyu Angelov, who made it clear that few other options will be considered in addition to the American F-16, the German-UK-Italian-Spanish Eurofighter Typhoon, and the Swedish Gripen.

Angelov said the tender for the procurement of the new fighter jets for the Bulgarian Air Force will be announced at the beginning of 2011. The new plane will be selected by the middle of 2012, and the delivery should start in 2015.

"Our need for a new fighter jet is obvious," said Gen. Angelov, explaining that the investment project for this and other defense deals by 2020 must be adopted by the Parliament.
