Bulgaria has contributed a great deal to the democratization and stabilization of its region, according to former Switzerland President Joseph Deiss, who is chairing the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.

Deiss met in New York City with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who is on a week-long visit to the US for the 65th regular session of the UN General Assembly and for the summit on the UN Millenium Development Goals 10 years after they were outlined, and five years before the deadline for their accomplishment.

"Today Bulgaria is a zone of stability. I congratulate you for your efforts and will for the democratization of your country and the entire region," Joseph Deiss told Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov as cited by the press center of the Council of Ministers.

Deiss is also said to have praised the Borisov government for achieving progress in the crackdown on corruption and organized crime. He shared with the PM his impressions from Bulgaria from the period when he served as the minister of economy and minister of finance of Switzerland.

Borisov in turn has used the occasion to thank the government and the people of Switzerland for the funds that they have provided for development projects in Bulgaria.

He further emphasized the importance of the UN policies aimed at boosting the stability in the Balkans and solving the issues of the countries in the region.

Borisov has told Deiss that his Cabinet is taking measures for the recovery of the Bulgarian economy amidst the global crisis.

"Bulgaria is an island of peace and stability in terms of politics, finances, ethnic and religious relations," the Prime Minister declared before the UN GA session chair.
