Bulgaria's Borissov Calls for Suspension of Media Grants Amid Budget Controversy
Boyko Borissov, leader of GERB, escalated his criticism of Bulgarian media outlets receiving grants today, calling for the suspension of such funding
The two main opposition forces, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) held Wednesday another round of talks about the planned no-confidence vote against the cabinet of the center-right GERB party.
It was reported, however, the partners failed to reach an agreement about the reason to request such vote. BSP say the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) government is failing in the health reform, the anti-crisis measures and in improving wages and quality of life in the country while for DPS the major failure is the crisis in the culture sector.
The parties have agreed to meet again next week to iron out the discord. The opposition has, however, united around the opinion the no-confidence vote must be held before the debate about the 2011 State budget and that they would not commit the same mistake as previous oppositions to first declare such vote and then look for grounds.
Meanwhile, the right-wing Blue Coalition announced they would not take part in the consultations over deep political differences with the Socialists regarding the direction in which the country must be led. The right-wing point out BSP and DPS are not an alternative to the GERB rule, because, as members of the previous coalition cabinet, they bear the strongest responsibility for the current situation.
The leader of the far-right, nationalist Ataka party, Volen Siderov, stated the "Blues" would end up supporting the opposition if there is such vote.
GERB praised the right-wing for staying away of attempts to stir a political crisis in the country.
