A locomotive and three electric cars almost derailed in northwestern Bulgaria Sunday night after thieves trying to steal an electric cable knocked down a pole on the rail tracks.
The news was reported by the Regional Police Directorate in the Danube city of Vidin, saying the incident happened around midnight.
The employee on duty at the locomotive depot in Vidin called the police to let them know there was a pole on the tracks of the Vidin-Koshava section and the train crossed it, but the diesel locomotive managed to stop without derailing. The pole got stuck between its front and back axis.
Teams of the police, the Civil Defense and the CEZ power utility have been immediately dispatched to the location of the incident. They found out the pole went down after a 30-meter cable had been stolen.
The Civil Defense removed the pole. There was no material damage to the locomotive and changes in the regular train schedule.
