The greatest mosque in Bulgaria, Shumen's Tombul Cami, was vandalized overnight, it was reported Thursday.

Upon going to the Muslim temple, believers saw inscriptions insulting Islam, as well as Bulgarian nationalist symbols and a Nazi swastika.

The authors of the despicable and cowardly deed also used the alleged old Bulgarian rune Y, used by fringe ultra-right Bulgarian National Union party. BNU officials have denied all links with the vandal act, saying that they do not oppose Islam and that there is no way that one of their party members could do that.

The Shumen Muslim community expressed their outrage at the shameful deed.

Tombul Mosque, also known as the Sherif Halil Pasha Mosque, in the north-eastern Bulgarian town of Shumen is the greatest in Bulgaria and among the largest on the whole Balkan peninsula. It was built between 1740 and 1744. It boasts a 40-meter minaret, lavish decoration and a Muslim school building (madrasah) that hosted a large library. At present it is undergoing renovation.
