Bulgaria: South Ossetia Marks 2 Years since 2008 Georgia-Russia War Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (C) welcomes his counterparts from Abkhazia, Serguei Bagapsh (L) and South Ossetia, Eduard Kokoity (R) in Caracas, Venezuela, on 23 July 2010.

The breakaway Republic of South Ossetia remembered the attack of Georgian forces on its capital Tshinvali that led to a brief war between Georgia and Russia.

The residents of Tshinvali marked the two year since the attack late Saturday night, at 11:35 pm, the time when Georgian forces shelled with rockets and artillery the capital of the separatist autonomous province.

“They say time heals everything but it will never heal the pain in the hearts of our people. On this day a hail of shells poured on our republic... We did not start the war but this fact does not make it easier for those who lost their loved ones,” said Eduard Kokoity, President of South Ossetia at the remembrance, as cited by RIA Novosti.

According to a report of the Georgian government, the attack on Tshinvali was launched after a large number of Russian troops and tanks started to enter the territory of South Ossetia.

The 2008 South Ossetia War lasted from August 7 till August 12, 2008. South Ossetia and the other separatist Georgian region Abkhazia declared independence on August 21. Subsequently, they have been recognized only by Russia, Nicaragua and Venezuela.
