The construction of the much problematic Lyulin Highway near Sofia has been delayed further, found a surprise government inspection.

The 19-km Lyulin Highway is supposed to become Bulgaria’s first completed highway. It will connect the capital Sofia with the Daskalovo road junction near Pernik, and thus, with the Struma Highway leading to the Greek border and the Sofia-Nis Highway leading into Serbia.

The Lyulin Highway was supposed to have been completed by 2010 but after a number of issues with the work of the Turkish company executing the project Mapa Cenghiz, the Bulgarian authorities agreed to renegotiate the contract by providing substantial additional funds and setting May 15, 2011, as the deadline for the opening of the new road.

The surprise check carried out Friday by Deputy Minister of Regional Development Georgi Pregyov and Deputy Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski, however, found that the construction had fallen behind schedule by 10 days.

Lazar Lazarov, member of the Board of the Bulgarian Road Infrastructure Agency, has explained that the construction had been delayed by the torrential rains in the past few days.

The Turkish company Mapa Cenghiz is reported to have hired 100 additional workers in order to complete the project on time. According to the terms of the renegotiated agreement, by December 31, 2010, 90% of the Lyulin Highway must be completed.
