Billa Supermarket Chain Buys Emblematic Sofia Building: Billa Supermarket Chain Buys Emblematic Sofia Building Billa, which is owned by German concern REWE Group, currently operates 65 outlets in Bulgaria, of which 12 in Sofia. File photo

The emblematic building of the former Sofia movie theaterIztok” (East) has been acquired by the German supermarket chain Billa.

The building, on the Sofia main thoroughfare “Tsarigradsko Shosse,” across from the “Pliska” hotel, which has been closed for years and had deteriorated badly, has been purchased for EUR 1.43 M.

The movie theater’s former owners – the “Equest-Pelikan” Fund report the money has been already wired. Equest announced their intentions to sell the building 2 years ago. They now say they have a preliminary contract to sell the ex movie theater “Evropa Palace” in downtown Sofia and will finalize the deal by mid-September, but the buyer remains unknown.

The company also continues the negotiation to sell the “Urvich” former movie theater.
