Deputy speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament Lyuben Kornezov slammed the politics of the ruling center-right GERB party, saying it does not respect the Bulgarian Constitution.

Thursday Kornezov submitted the Law Amending the Law on the National Archive, adopted by Parliament July 21, for review to the Bulgarian Constitutional Court.

Kornezov, who is MP from the main opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, a jurist and former Constitutional Judge.

He claims that the law is anti-constitutional on at least two counts. Its text backdates its entry into force June 12, more than a month after it was passed by Parliament, and actually even before it was officially tabled.

What is more, the text of the law is exactly the same as the text of a prior act adopted by Parliament December 2009 and declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court May 2010.

GERB is putting itself above the Constitution and the Constitutional Court,” exclaimed Kornezov,. “Instead of abiding by the decision of the Constitutional Court, GERB MPs tabled exactly the same bill, word for word, letter for letter.”

The socialist MP further claimed that during the period of the controversy GERB staged a political purge in the State Archives Agency, firing over 130 individual. According to him, the ruling party's intent is to gain firm control of state information to its own advantage.

Thursday the deputy speaker of the Bulgarian parliament also commented on the heated conflict between Bulgaria's executive and judiciary branch on occasion of the release on bail of suspects from the high-profile “Killers” and “All Trumps” cases. Kornezov expressed disaffection over PM Boyko Borisov's and Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov's negative comments on the work of the judiciary, saying that a democratic country should respect the decisions of its judges.

According to Kornezov's comments, GERB is not very earnest about upholding the rule of law in Bulgaria. “Nobody can be above the law – not even the PM, and especially not the Minister of Interior,” said the socialist.
