The existing cooperation between the coast guards of Bulgaria and Russia has sufficient potential to crack down on trans-border crime, according to officials from both countries.

“We have enough resources to fight trans-border crimes such as international terrorism, contraband, drug trafficking, illegal migration – as long as all EU states are united behind this goal,” declared Tuesday in Bulgaria’s major port Varna Major-General Fedor Cherednichenko, head of the Black Sea-Azov Sea Directorate of the Coast Guard of the Russian Federation.

Cherednichenko was received by the Varna Mayor Kiril Yordanov and Deputy Mayor Hristo Bozov. He arrived on the Russian coast guard ship Kuban as part of a cooperation program with the Bulgarian authorities aimed at tackling trans-border crime in the Black Sea which started back in 2000. Tuesday’s visit of the Kuban ship was the sixth visit of a coast guard ship to a port of the other country.

The Bulgarian city of Varna is a sister city of the major Russian Black Sea port Novorossiysk.
