Argentina has become the first Latin American country to legalize same-sex marriage.

Gay marriage became legal in Argentina after its Senate adopted new legislation with 33 votes in favor, 27 against, and three abstentions, reported the BBC.

The bill had already been passed by the Chamber of Deputies. It has been backed by the center-left government of President Cristina Fernandez.

The law, which was debated for 14 hours, with rival rallies outside the parliament building in Buenos Aires, also allows same-sex couples to adopt.

Prior to the adoption of the new law, the city of Buenos Aires allowed same-sex civil unions, being the first city in Latin America to do so.

Same-sex marriage is also legal in Canada, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, and some states in the USA.
