A series of explosions hit a hydroelectric power station in Russia's Kabardino-Balkaria region, killed two guards, injured 3 others, and caused fire in engine room.

The plant is located on the Baksan river lies in the North Caucasus, which is an area known to be the center of militant Islamic violence, even though less than neighboring Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.

The four bombs were detonated by attackers at 5:25 am local time. The Russian State-owned RusHydro company said supplies to the electricity grid were not affected, there is no danger of a technical accident or disaster, but the flow of water from the dam had been stopped to prevent flooding. I fifth bomb failed to go on.

According to local police, two cars carrying half a dozen assailants attacked the plant, shooting two guards and wounding three other people. The attackers, reportedly, seized two Kalashnikov assault guns from the dead guards.

The same group are believed to have earlier opened fire on a police station in the town of Baksan. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

All other staff at the plant is reported to be unharmed.
