Bulgaria's interior minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov spectacularly downplayed the culpability of ex-PM Sergey Stanishev, who was charged a week ago with leaking classified information.

Speaking about the possibility of introducing so-called “special courts” in Bulgaria's judicial system, which are intended to rule on especially important cases, Tsvetanov commented that Stanishev's case would not go to such a court.

“He is not that guilty as to go to a special court,” said Tsvetanov adding that the case is one of mere negligence and lack of experience.

Accusations against Stanishev leaking or hiding classified reports on Bulgaria's criminal world broke out in October 2009 and were made much of. Since October even PM Boyko Borisov has spoken many times on the case and vowed to bring his predecessor to justice. The circumstances around the hidden or leaked reports of notorious State Agency for National Security were given great importance.

Stanishev, on his part, has always dismissed the case against him as unfounded and politically motivated.
