Illegal extraction of sand and other raw materials for construction is polluting Bulgaria Strandzha Nature Park, alerted park authorities quoted by Bulgarian daily Dnevnik.

Strandzha is a sparsely populated low mountain area in Bulgaria's south-east corner, bordering on Turkey and the Black Sea. Much of its territory are taken up by the Strandzha National Park, the largest protected area in Bulgaria and home to numerous habitats and protected species. The park is part of the EU Natura 2000 network.

For more than 10 years an extraction company has been digging up, sifting and selling sand in Strandzha's heart, downstream river Veleka nearby Kosti village, according to the park authorities' report.

The firm, Technometalstroy Complect, has a permit from the Bulgarian Ministry of Environment for cleaning up the river bed, but according to the report the nature of its activities is entirely different.

Moreover, due to this its actions are not monitored and regulated and thus endangers the local environment on a day-to-day basis with pollution from extracting and failure of equipment.

The report from the Nature Park authorities and Dnevnik also adds that this has set a precedent for other persons who also illegally dig up vast quantities of raw materials. A whole enterprise of selling illegally extracted construction materials is underway in the southern Bulgarian Black Sea region, according to the alert.

The park authorities appeal to the Ministry of Environment to launch the investigation and stop the damaging activities.
