Boyko Borisov Votes with a Paper Ballot: Is there a Functioning Machine, or Have They Run Out?
Boyko Borisov chose to cast his vote with a paper ballot in Bankya today.
Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, who headed the country's government in 2005-2009, claims the country would not be in "such a bad position" at present if he was in power.
Stanishev stated at the fifth Congress of the Bulgarian Antifascist Union on Saturday that he would deal with effective state investments and with the payment of the businesses, so that there is not a huge inter-company debt.
“The ruling party is talking about a tax hike. I told the PM to urgently consult with the parliamentary forces because it is necessary to start the work on the economic policy and next year’s budget, which could be worse that what is adopted now,” he said.
According to Stanishev, consultations must be made for emergency measures because the situation is getting out of control. In his words, unless some drastic changes are made, the country will face a serious financial meltdown, tax hike and reduction of income.
The former PM also said he did not approve the government’s approach on the issue of the annual paid vacation leaves.
“This cabinet transfers the burden of the economic crisis and its incompetence to collect revenue on the ordinary people,” he said, adding that the first victims of the government are the pensioners because their pensions have not been raised as promised.
Stanishev stated that his party has proposed on second reading a raise of the pensions, according to the inflation in the country, as it is in Switzerland.
He also expressed concern about the reduction of the budget for education and the conditions of the Bulgarian hospitals.
“The government is leading many hospitals to bankruptcy. They do no close, but bankrupt naturally because of the imposed rules,” Stanishev said.
The leader of the Bulgarian Socialists denied the accusations by the current PM Boyko Borisov that the building of the Bulgarian nuclear power plant “Belene” could have begun during the ruling of the previous cabinet.
“It takes time to create a project that would be approved by the European Commission. This is why NPP “Belene” has not been built by now,” Stanishev said and added that the constructions of the NPP could begin in October 2010. He called Borisov’s accusations a manipulation.
