Bulgaria has much to be proud of because its anti-fascists took part in the struggle against the greatest threat for the world in the 20th century, according to ex PM and Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev.

Stanishev spoke at the annual Victory in Europe Day rally before the Monument of the Soviet Army in Sofia which attracted a couple of thousand representatives of leftist and anti-fascist organizations as well as a number of World War II veterans.

In his speech, Stanishev underscored the fact that he appeared on the podium as a grandson of a participant in the Patriotic War (i.e. World War II), and the son of a prominent anti-fascist.

During Sunday’s rally in Sofia, Stanishev received a medal on behalf of his father presented to him by Bulgarian Vice-President Angel Marin.

Dimitar Stanishev, a high-ranking member of the Bulgarian Communist Party, was awarded posthumously for his anti-fascist activities.

In his speech, the former Prime Minister declared that without the Victory in Europe Day over Nazi Germany, there will be no Day of Europe celebrations today.

He greeted the surviving Bulgarian World War II veterans but pointed out that May 9 was also a day to remember that there were still political forces that based their positions on xenophobia and hatred. He called upon all democratically oriented people to unite against them.

“The Victory in Europe Day is a day of triumph of good over evil, of progressive ideas over hate. It is sad that Bulgaria is probably the only nation where the anti-fascist resistance does not have the status of participants in the Patriotic War even though more than half a million Bulgarians took part in the anti-fascist efforts,” concluded Stanishev.

The military attache of the Russian Federation in Bulgaria, Andrei Kindyakov, also spoke at the rally before the Soviet Army Monument in Sofia.
