UK Votes in Much Anticipated General Elections

About 44 million voters are eligible to take part in the general elections in the United Kingdom on Thursday, May 6, 2010.

The polling stations throughout the UK opened at 7 am local time, and will close at 10 pm.

A total of 4 150 candidates are competing for election to the British Parliament in the 649 constituencies across the country. In addition, 164 local authorities in the UK are holding elections for councilors.

Thursday’s elections in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will decide the fater of incumbent Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and the Labor Party, which has been in power for the last 13 years.

Brown himself took over in 2007 from Tony Blair who had been the head of the British government since 1997.

A number of recent public opinion polls, the Conservative Party is likely to do better than Labor this time; however, there has been no certain indication that the Torries will score a cathegorical victory.

The elections were preceded by a month of heated campaigning including the first-ever televised debates in the UK between the leaders of the three major political party – PM Brown, David Cameron of the Conservative Party, and Nick Clegg of the Liberal Democrats.
