Construction of the third stretch of the Trakiya Highway will begin no later than August 2010, according to Bulgaria's Regional Development Minister Rosen Plevneliev.

Minister Plevneliev who was present during Tuesday's opening of the bids for the tender, said that  "the great number of the tender bidders is a gurantee for keen competition."

The tender on offer is for the construction of the section that will connect the Bulgarian cities of Nova Zagora and Karnobat.

The budget of the project is BGN 3 M per kilometer and an overall of 11 companies have come up with bids.

“Unified Highway Trace” which won the tender for the construction of the 32-km stretch connecting the cities of Stara Zagora and Nova Zagora did not come up with a bid because it missed the application deadline.

Consortium Strabag which appealed the tender for the 2nd lot section of the Trakiya Highway has submitted a bid for the 3rd stretch.

Other tender bids have been made by Do?u? Construction Group, Bulgarian Highways – Lot 3, Alpine Bau GmbH, Balkanstroy Jsc. An Azerbaijan construction company is also a bidder in the tender.

“We have taken all precautionary measures to ensure fair competition. Security cameras have been installed where the safes with the bids are. The work of the Commission, which is comprised of nine people, will also be recorded on camera. There'll be full transparency of all tender procedures,” explained Tuesday Minister Plevneliev.

Bulgaria's regional minister noted that the constriction of the Sofia-Dragoman-Kalotina section that will connect Sofia with the Serbian highway will be registered as lot 0 of the Trakiya Highway.

Minister Plevneliev said Tuesday he has already scheduled a meeting with the European Commission to discuss possibilities to include the 48-km Sofia-Kalotina stretch in the EU Operational 'Transport' Program.

Though incomplete the Trakiya Highway is the Bulgarian highway project which is closest to completion. It will connect the capital Sofia with the Black Sea city of Burgas. A total of 328 km of the 443-km highway have already been built.
