The number of Bulgarians consuming alcohol is up by 11% between 2006 and 2009 but there is a similar increase in the number of those who refrain from binge drinking (5 drinks or more on any one occasion).

The data comes from the latest Eurobarometer report about EU citizens’ attitudes towards alcohol.

Bulgarians, with 91%, rank among the EU citizens most likely to have had an alcoholic beverage in the past 30 days, along with Greeks, French and Portuguese – all coming second while Italians lead the ranking with 94%.

Latvians, on the other hand side, are the most moderate drinkers with 74%.

In addition, every fourth Bulgarian drinks at least once a week and the number is the same for those who drink 2 to 3 times a month. But 65% of Bulgarians don't drink more than 2 drinks on one occasion while another 15% say they would consume more than 2 drinks making Bulgarians moderate alcohol users.

25% of those poled in Bulgaria say they never purchase alcoholic beverages, including those who drink home-made alcohol and those who don't drink at all. Bulgarians, Romanians and Slovak also responded more often than other EU citizens that they would buy less alcohol if prices go up while half of all Bulgarians said they would not drink more if alcohol prices go down by 25%.

Bulgarians, with 97%, are the strongest supporters in the EU for a minimum age of 18 years for alcohol sales and for banning alcohol advertising that targets young people. In comparison, only 70% of the Dutch support such ban. 25% of Bulgarians are convinced young people and hard-core drinkers would not buy less if prices go up.

The majority (91%) of Bulgarians are aware alcohol consumption is linked to heart decease, but the level of agreement about the risk of depression is the lowest in EU (78%). Only 44% are aware the law prohibits driving with a blood alcohol concentration of over 0.5 grams per liter. 60% of the respondents, however, say they never drive.

Social consequences from alcohol drinking are of concern for Bulgarians, with 95% believing alcohol abuse leads to domestic and street violence, family, school and work problems.

The Eurobarometer poll was conducted in October 2009 with 1 000 Bulgarians out of a total of 26 788 EU citizens.
