The largest Bulgarian mobile operator M-Tel has decided to give up developing its WiMAX network, and to focus UMTS network.
M-Tel has decided to transer its permit for the use of a radio frequency for WiMAX services to another Bulgarian WiMAX operator, Max Telecom.
The amount of the deal has not been revealed, and it is yet to be sealed by the Bulgarian state Communications Regulation Commission.
In addition to Max Telecom and M-Tel, three more companies have licenses for WiMax (Worldwide Interoperbility for Microwave Access) technologies in Bulgaria – TransTelecom (renamed 4ever), Nexcom, and Carrier.BG. The last three, however, do not have a functioning WiMAX network.
The largest Bulgarian mobile operator M-Tel has already invested EUR 600 M in infrastructure in order to expand the use of the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommications System) technology.
As a result, with the introduction of the HSPA+ technology, the M-Tel wireless network has reached a capacity allowing a data transfer of 21 Mbps. The company has said that these investments would allow to provide an even faster Internet and email access through mobile phones and laptops.
