Dr. Anna-Maria Borisova, who succeeds Bozhidar Nanev as Health Minister in the cabinet of the ruling GERB party, is a 1974 graduate of the Sofia Medical Academy.
Her first job was as an internal medicine physician at the regional hospital in the northern city of Lovech.
In 1980, Borisova takes a specialization in internal medicine while in 1982 she becomes a specialist in endocrinology.
In 1987, Borisova becomes a Doctor of Medicine with a thesis focusing on different forms of diabetes. She has also worked on a Doctoral thesis about the effects of osteoporosis medications on post-menstrual metabolic changes in women.
Since 2006, Prof. Borisova is the Head of the Clinic for Metabolic Bone Diseases at the Sofia Endocrinology Hospital “Ivan Penchev.”
The new Health Minister is the President of the Bulgarian Endocrinology Union and of the Bulgarian League for Osteoporosis Treatment.
Borisova is known as a strong critic of the former Three-Way Coalition Cabinet of Socialist PM, Sergey Stanishev, and for her support for diabetic and osteoporosis patients.
