Dr. Anna-Maria Borisova will succeed Bozhidar Nanev as Health Minister in the cabinet of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.
The news about the appointment was announced Wednesday by Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov.
Prof. Borisova is the Head of the Clinic for Metabolic Bone Diseases at the Sofia Endocrinology Hospital “Ivan Penchev” and the Head of the Bulgarian Endocrinology Union. Borisova is known as a strong critic of the former Three-Way Coalition Cabinet of Socialist PM, Sergey Stanishev, and for her support for diabetic and osteoporosis patients.
As Head of the Osteoporosis Union, the new Health Minister was one of the most ardent lobbyists for including osteoporosis medications in the positive medicine list, namely the one made by the pharmaceutical company Roche.
One week ago, Nanev was ousted as Health Minister precisely because he signed two contracts with Roche for the supply of the anti-viral flu medicine Tamiflu. He is charged with concluding deals which were unfavorable for the State. The Minister insists he is innocent, but resigned hours after the charges were pressed.
GERB leader Boyko Borissov reacted to the fall of the Zhelyazkov government during a live broadcast on his official Facebook page, following the mass protests across the country.
The government is making a second clumsy attempt to introduce the state budget.
