April 4 has been declared an “Atlantic Solidarity Day” in Bulgaria on the occasion of the country’s NATO accession on March 29, 2004, when in Washington, D.C., the Alliance accepted the ratified documents for the membership of Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

The Bulgarian national flag was formally raised over the NATO headquarters in Brussels on April 2, 2004.

Twelve nations – Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the UK, and the USA – formally signed the Washington Treaty forming NATO on April 4, 1949. The Treaty came into force on August 24, 1949.
