Bulgaria’s government hopes to raise over BGN 1 B by offering on concession several key railway stations, ports, and airports.

This announcement made Thursday by representatives of the Transport Ministry comes in the wake of the 60 anti-crisis measures sealed Wednesday by the government, the trade unions, and the business sector.

Deputy Transport Minister Kamen Kichev, and Veneta Markova, head of the Concessions Directorate of the Ministry of Transport, IT, and Communications, presented its strategy for the development of the country’s transport infrastructure.

Kichev explained that the revenue is expected to come from investments realized by the future concessionaires.

Thus, the government plans to offer on concession the Black Sea ports of Varna and Burgas, and the Danube ports of Ruse, Vidin, and Lom.

The same is envisaged for the airports in Plovdiv, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Stara Zagore, and Ruse.

The government does not plan to offer on concession the Sofia Airport because it is very profitable. However, it is going to offer to potential concessionaires the construction of new cargo terminals at the airports of Sofia and Plovdiv.

The ports of Varna, Ruse, and Vidin are the only ones which register profit; however, the government has decided to go ahead with their concessions in spite of that.

The other measure presented by the Transport Ministry includes the concessions of railway stations, including the Central Railway Station in Sofia which will be offered together with the smaller Poduyane station, also in Sofia.
