The snapping of an elevator cable at a maternity home in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia, has caused an accident in which several people have been injured.
The incident occurred on Tueday afternoon at the "Mother House" (Maichin Dom) maternity home. The injured have been rushed to Pirogov Hospital.
Five casualties are currently being examined by emergency staff, the hospital has announced. They confirm that the number included one pregnant woman, one midwife, and one man. They have not released information about the other two casualties.
According to early reports, the lift was carrying 10-12 passengers when a supporting cable snapped, and the elevator fell several floors, beforte becoming wedged in the shaft. The trapped occupants were freed by emergency services summoned to the scene.
Among the elevators passengers, three other expectant women escaped injury, and are being looked after at the maternity home.
