The majority of the Bulgarians favor the special operations launched recently by the Interior Ministry, according to a public opinion poll.

According to the results of the poll of the National Center for Studying Public Opnion released Sunday, 71% of the Bulgarians do not doubt the political will of the Borisov government to fight organized crime.

Some 55% have said they followed closely the special operations of the Interior in the recent months which became famous by their code names such as “The Impudent” and “Octopus.”

The measures against high-ranking state officials suspected of corruption are met with approval by 87% of the respondents.

Almost two-thirds of the Bulgarians go as far as suggesting that the special police operations carried out recently are going to restore the trust of the EU institutions in the authorities in Sofia.

At the same time, however, 46% are outrightly pessimistic about the outcome of the fight against organized crime citing the inability of justice system to produce proper verdicts. Only 29% believe that Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov will turn out to be right when he stated that “This time the state will beat the mafia.”

The poll was conducted on February 20-23 among 804 respondents from the around the country.
