Bulgaria Ethnic Turks Tie Suicide to Plot to Kill Their Leader
Ahmed Emin, one of the major figures of Bulgaria’s ethnic Turkish party DPS who committed suicide in the fall of 2008, was in a plot to kill the party leader Ahmed Dogan.
This was stated Thursday by Kamen Kostadinov, an MP from the DPS party (“Movement for Rights and Freedoms”), on the Bulgarian National Television.
Kostadinov said the DPS party had indirect evidence proving this suspicion such as irregularities in Emin’s behavior in the period before he committed suicide. Emin was the head of the political cabinet of the DPS leader Ahmed Dogan, and one of his close associates.
Kostadinov also said Ahmed Emin was a secret agent of the former State Security service whose job was to spy on Ahmed Dogan. At the time of his death, Emin was an agent of the State National Security Service DANS, according to the MP, who also said the party did not learn about this until after Emin’s death.
The DPS deputy went as far as suggesting that some circles in DANS wanted to liquidate Ahmed Dogan because he could interfere with some of their plans, and that Emin was supposed to kill Dogan but eventually could not bear the pressure of this task, and committed suicide.
MP from the Blue Coalition, Atanas Atanasov, who is a former head of Bulgaria’s counter-intelligence, said in turn that Ahmed Emin was likely pressured by former agents of the State Security service demanding from him certain actions against his own party.
Thursday’s statements come after Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, said on Wednesday the prosecutors and police had done a sloppy job investigating the suicide of Ahmed Emin, and that the investigation should be reopened.
