Borisov 3 Cabinet To Discuss the Nomination For a Bulgarian EU Commissioner Today
On the first government meeting of the Borisov 3 cabinet today, they will consider the nomination for a Bulgarian EU Commissioner, according to BGNES.
Bulgaria’s ex EU Commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, has rejected EC Commission President José Manuel Barroso's proposal to become head of the Bureau of European Policy Advisers (BEPA), the in-house Commission think-tank.
On February 9 Bulgaria's new European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva took over from Kuneva at a short meeting at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, but it was reported that Commission President Barroso would appoint Kuneva as head of BEPA.
“After I made my final decision about a widely commented proposal extended to me, I would like to share it with you, because I appreciate very much the interest and support I am receiving from the people, media and institutions in Bulgaria,” Kuneva stated Saturday, cited by BNR.
“My three years in Brussels contributed to the development of Europe’s politics and Bulgaria’s image. I was touched a lot by President Barroso’s proposal a few months ago – to continue working in the Commission in a senior position. I took it as an assessment of the work my team and I did,” she continued.
Kuneva concluded; “Despite all these arguments, I see myself as a politician. I would like to have the freedom and energy to dedicate my knowledge to a better Bulgaria, a better Europe. We have something we can be first in. Both Bulgaria in the EU and Europe in the world. Europe wins with Bulgaria’s upward development and the world wins with Europe’s upward development and the solution of the difficulties in Bulgaria is a great chance for a new and very energetic Bulgaria – this is the way I dream of seeing Bulgaria in the next years.”
Kuneva was widely regarded as being very successful in handling her EU consumer affairs portfolio.
