Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, was given a rather warm welcome by the Bulgarian community in London, UK, Sunday night.

Borisov’s visit to London started with the Chelsea-Arsenal game in which Chelsea – Borisov’s favorite English team – triumphed.

After the derby on Stamford Bridge, the Bulgarian PM headed straight for the Bulgarian Embassy where he was welcomed by some 400 Bulgarians who filled up the three banquet halls there, the Deutsche Welle has reported.

Borisov was asked if the GERB government was really intent on abolishing dual citizenship. Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov who is part of the Bulgarian delegation assuaged these fears.

Most of the Bulgarians who flocked to the Embassy in London wanted to take a photo with the Prime Minister.

Borisov was presented a special letter of gratitude from the Association of Bulgarian Schools Abroad.

“We are honored that you have decided to pay attention to us and to come here,” a representative of one of the two Bulgarian schools in London told the PM.

Deutche Welle reminds that most of the 7 000 Bulgarians registered in the UK voted for Borisov’s GERB party in the last Parliamentary Elections in July 2009.

Members of the Bulgarian diaspora even gave Boyko Borisov a picture entitled “Eagle’s Attack”, and wished him to be “the Bulgarian eagle.”

“Mr. Borisov, on behalf of the Bulgarian intelligentsia in England, we would like to present you with this picture. This is “The Attack of the Eagle.” We believe that you are the eagle,” Borisov was told.

During Borisov’s meeting with the Bulgarian diaspora in London, one of the sons of the former Bulgarian Tsar and PM Simeon Saxe-Coburg, Kiril Saxe-Coburg, who is an investment banker in the City, declared that the Bulgarian government was doing relatively well economically, and forecast a positive perspective for UK investments in Bulgaria, as cited by Deutsche Welle.

In his address to the Bulgarian diaspora in London, Borisov stressed the need to restore the trust of Western countries in Bulgaria’s secret services.

“In the last year, many of the foreign intelligence services did not work with ours. Ours were told directly – we are not going to work with you. I am going to save the reasons for that because there are foreign media present here. We want to restore our authority and others’ trust in us,” Borisov declared. He is accompanied in London by the heads of the three Bulgarian special services – the National Investigating Service, the State National Security Agency (DANS), and the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (GDBOP).
