Bulgaria’s new EU Commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, thanked Wednesday night all Bulgarians for their support for her EC bid.

“I am surprised by the very warm welcome I got at the Commission. I expected they would be well predisposed towards me but I did not expect that warm a welcome,” Georgieva told the bTV channel a couple of hours after her EP hearing led to her confirmation as EU’s first Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid.

“The hardest question for me is how to unify the response on part of the military and the humanitarian workers from now on. This is a complex topic not just for me but for the entire world,” she stated regarding her portfolio.

“I have been working in an international organization so in a sense I am just going from one big family into another,” said Georgieva who is about to resign as Vice-President of the World Bank a day before the new EC is voted into office on February 9, 2010.

“I want to thank the Bulgarian government for its support, to my colleagues from the GERB party, but most of all, to all Bulgarians for their support before the hearing and for their warm reaction,” Georgieva said.
