Prevention is critical, it pays for itself and it is good for the European taxpayers, said Bulgaria’s EC Humanitarian Aid Designate Kristalina Georgieva during her confirmation hearing at the European Parliament.
Georgieva recalled a project that she did in her capacity of World Bank Director in Russia, under which the they hydro-meteorological project of the country had to be financed.
“We estimated that for every USD 1 invested in prevention, we had USD 16 benefit,” she said.
Asked about the situation in Congo, she said:
“If we have used all avenues of dialogue, we need to call it quits,” she said.
Georgieva reiterated that she will seek the help of the European Parliament and “will count on its wisdom”.
Bulgaria named World Bank official Kristalina Georgieva to replace Rumiana Jeleva, who withdrew her candidacy for the post of EU commissioner for humanitarian aid after politicians accused her of incompetence and dubious business practices.
