Togo’s national football team has been penalized to not take part in the next two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, announced the news Saturday, cited by the Bulgarian news agency BGNES.

Hayatou based the decision on what he says was government interference with Togo’s resolution to withdraw from the 2010 tournament in Angola after a terrorist attack on the bus carrying the team.

The attack happened January 9 in Cabinda when machine gun fire struck the bus, which was taking the players to their game with Ghana. The Assistant Coach and the Director of Communications were killed.

The Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) claimed responsibility for the attack.
